Birthright of Columbia

Birthright is a non-profit organization that provides caring, non-judgmental support to girls and women facing an unplanned pregnancy. Birthright began in Toronto, Canada, in 1968, when Louise Summerhill, a busy wife and mother of seven children, felt something should be done to help women facing unplanned pregnancies. Twelve years later, in 1980, Hank and Sally Chardos opened the Columbia SC chapter, now one of about 250 locations served by Birthright International.

Cardinal Newman School
Cardinal Newman

Cardinal Newman School is a Catholic middle and high school whose mission is to provide an academically rigorous Christian education to young men and women from diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. Cardinal Newman roots began at the Ursuline Academy, which began serving the Columbia community in 1858. The school was renamed Cardinal Newman in 1961.

Christ Central

Christ Central is committed to researching the root cause of poverty among people in local communities across America and around the world. It is a resource to government, commerce, education, church, and individuals, offering a godly response to the needs of people, to reestablish hope in the hearts of those in communities we serve. The Christ Central Optical Clinic, the Columbia Mission Station, Concessions of Hope at Hope Plaza, and Hannah House are all entities in Richland County, SC.

Cooperative Ministry

The mission is to increase the economic self-sufficiency of people experiencing poverty in the Midlands through crisis assistance and sustainability programs. In 1982, it was founded by five churches in downtown Columbia. Today, The Cooperative Ministry is supported by sixty-one faith partners joining with corporations, family foundations, community organizations, government agencies, small businesses, and thousands of individuals.

Giving Tree

The Giving Tree is one of our parish outreach programs. St. Joseph collaborates with the Hispanic Outreach Ministry at St. John Neumann Church. Money is collected to provide sneakers and gift cards to needy families at Christmas.

HomeWorks of

HomeWorks is a Christ-Centered nonprofit organization that provides home repair services to low-income homeowners while mentoring and discipling youth in the process. Established in 1996, HomeWorks serves South Carolina residents in need.

Live Oaks Counseling

Live Oaks Counseling Center provides professional and affordable mental health counseling to people struggling with life issues and offers opportunities for spiritual growth and wellness. Serving Columbia since 1991, Live Oak Counseling Center is a place of life, growth, and new beginnings for those who are struggling with grief, depression, anxiety, and difficult family issues.

Nami of Mid-Carolina

The National Alliance of Mental Illness Mid-Carolina is dedicated to improving the quality of life for people with mental illness and their families through support, education, and advocacy. Started in 1970 by families in Madison, WI, NAMI has blossomed into the nation's leading voice on mental health. Today, it is an alliance of more than six hundred local Affiliates and 48 State Organizations who work in communities to raise awareness and provide support and education that was not previously available to those in need.

St. Vincent de Paul

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organization, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually- offering person-to-person service to those who are needy and suffering. Organized locally, St. Joseph’s St. Vincent de Paul feeds the hungry of our community through our food pantry in the basement of the church. Utilities assistance is also provided.

The Free Medical

Since April 12, 1984, The Free Medical Clinic provides quality health care, at no cost, to residents of the community who cannot pay for such services and who have no health insurance. The staff and volunteers operate six examination rooms, a pharmacy, a small laboratory, and a classroom for patient education and meetings.

WSUMC Soup Cellar

Washington Street United Methodist Church Soup Cellar is an ecumenical ministry of churches in the Columbia area. It first opened its doors on October 15, 1979, and has been serving nutritious meals for those in need since.
