Declaration Fiducia supplicans

Several inquiries have been made regarding the Declaration Fiducia supplicans issued by the Vatican Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith.

Fiducia supplicans is comprised of three sections: The Blessing in the Sacrament of Marriage, The Meaning of the Various Blessings, and Blessings of Couples in Irregular Situations and of Couples of the Same Sex.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops offered a clarifying statement (emphasis added):

“The Declaration issued today by the Vatican’s Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith (DDF) articulated a distinction between liturgical (sacramental) blessings, and pastoral blessings, which may be given to persons who desire God’s loving grace in their lives. The Church’s teaching on marriage has not changed … while also making an effort to accompany people through the imparting of pastoral blessings, because each of us needs God’s healing love and mercy in our lives.”

I strongly encourage you to read the Declaration in its entirety. Let us continue to pray for unity in our Church.
